Timeless Tuesday is a day where we talk about the classics, the books written so long ago and yet still revered as 'need to read' books.
One such book is 'Pride and Prejudice.' It's been made into movies, a tv mini-series and even re-written into 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' (which we'll talk about another time). But throughout the years, it's been counted as a piece of classic literature, and for good reason. The story was written by Jane Austen between 1796 and 1797, and it sent to a publisher to see if they would print the book, but the publisher declined. At the time, the story was originally called 'First Impressions.' Around 1811, Austen made improvements to her story and changed the title to the one we know today, 'Pride and Prejudice.' The story was finally published in 1813, but Austen had sold her rights to the book and barely made any profit off of the story. The story sold out for its first edition published, and two editions came afterwards, selling just as well.
Throughout the years, 'Pride and Prejudice' has been hailed as one of the best books ever written, and it's one of the most amazing books I've ever read. Even though the story was written over 200 years ago, it still has a pull on people in the modern world. It's timeless, because it's as though people can still relate to it. It has a way of pulling at all emotions and it makes you wish the book wouldn't end. It can be a difficult read for some who aren't used to the style it's written in, but it's worth the slight setback once you get used to it. It is a book ahead of its time, showing that women could be independent and their own person in that age. It shows that you don't have to conform to what others want, and you can be yourself and that there are people that will care about you for that.
If you've see one of the movies or the tv series, then you have a basic understanding of the book. The book follows Elizabeth Bennet and her life and her many encounters with Mr. Darcy. When they first meet, the two completely dislike each other, barely tolerating the other. As the story progresses, Elizabeth's sister, Jane, falls in love with Darcy's friend, Bingley. However, one day Bingley leaves the county with no real explanation and Jane is heartbroken.
Many chapters later, after a shocking proposal from Darcy, Elizabeth finds out that Darcy was at fault for separating Bingley and Jane, and Elizabeth can't hold her tongue and tells Darcy how wrong it was of him to separate the two who were so in love with each other, as well as tell him that she refuses his proposal. However, Darcy immediately gives his reasons to Elizabeth about why the separation came about, and she is in a state of shock, realizing what he had done was because he thought he was protecting his friend. Elizabeth begins to think things through after finding out some truths, and she begins to see that she was wrong about a lot of things, including Mr. Darcy.
The story takes a turn and we start to see that Elizabeth's feelings regarding Darcy begin to do a complete turn around, and instead of hating him, she realizes that she may love him. It's amazing because as a reader, you follow along with Elizabeth's feelings, and you may hate Darcy at the beginning of the story as well, but as the story progresses and many things come to light, you start to realize what kind of person Darcy is, and you begin to see why Elizabeth's mind, and heart, are changing. Darcy's character is also revealed and you begin to like him as certain events happen and he fixes them, because he only thought of Elizabeth and her feelings during the events. It is a book that will be sure to make you smile as you slowly see two people fall in love after having such opposite opinions of each other at the beginning of their story. If you're looking for a book to read during a quiet moment, this is it!
