Have you ever read a book just because of the way the cover looked? I have, more times than I can count! But one in particular was not only beautiful to look at, but it was beautiful to read as well, and led me to read another book by the author, just because of the way it was written and pulled you into the story.
The book I'm talking about in this post is called 'The Sisterhood' by Helen Bryan. It does not sound like anything I would read, but it was an impulse buy from Amazon (surprise there) because it was two dollars for the paperback copy. I figured I'd try it out, so I purchased it and it was delivered to my house. And two days later, I was staring at the last page wishing there was more to the story.
The story follows Menina Walker, a girl who was adopted from South America with only a medal with a swallow on it as her heritage. She was found with the medal and it becomes an important and life-changing piece of history for her. After a series of events occur, she decides to travel to Spain to work on her college thesis. Events begin to unfold, almost like fate, and she begins to learn about the history of her medal after finding a convent that takes her in after she is mugged and stranded.
The story not only follows Menina in the present, but it also follows five other girls in the past, during the Spanish Inquisition, all of whom have ties to the convent and the swallow on Menina's medal.
This is one of my favorite books and I make sure it's always on my bookshelf! It's a great read, and if you don't read it now and are looking for a book for when you're sitting on the beach this summer, pick it up. It will make you gasp and smile and you'll close the book feeling content and happy with the story.
