With the temperatures up here in New England, everybody wants to stay inside. With the windchill making it feel like it's in the negative 20's, it's a great time to read a good book while wrapped in a warm blanket and relaxing. My pick this week is the first book in the Courtlight Series, 'Sworn To Raise.'
I wasn't sure what to expect out of this book, but I was able to get the first three books in the series for free from Amazon, so I figured I'd start reading and see how far I got. It also helped that when I read a review, someone called it a mix between The Princess Diaries (which I don't exactly see yet) and The Selection (which was a good series I read, along the lines of 'The Bachelor' tv show but elegant and with royalty in a dystopian world).
Problem was, I didn't want to stop reading it once I started. It's a great coming-of-age story about an orphan peasant girl who is discovered to have come from a powerful family that was thought to have died out, and with them, their magic. She is a Weathervane, a person with the ability to enhance the magic of others. She was recruited to be in the Companions guild, and is, at the point in the book I'm at, looking for a Patron whom she will work for and with. It's an amazing read, and I'm excited to continue the story. I'm only at 10% completed for the three books, so it's going to be a long read for the three, but I'm actually happy to say that it isn't as daunting a task as other series I've read. It's fast-paced and cleverly written. A few spelling errors here and there, but all books have them if you look hard enough.
And guess what? The book series is still free on Amazon! I've included the link below again in case you want to check it out!
