So many books are adapted into movies nowadays, leaving a lot of information out of the movie due to time constraints. Obviously the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter books are some examples of books made into movies. How many movies have you seen, and read the book about? A lot of people say they'd rather see the movie instead of reading the book.
However, almost every time I see a movie now that is based off of a book, I try and read the book first.
I feel that you can get a better understanding of the characters and you come to know them. When you're watching the movie after you've read the story, you will know what's going to happen, but it's amazing seeing it played out in front of your eyes instead of in your head. I also try to read the books before I see the movie so that I can get my own visual of the characters in my head. I can't remember the book or movie, but I remember watching the movie and going "That character is supposed to be blonde. Why does he have black hair?" Small things like that you can pick up on more if you've read the book and gotten the character set in your head. Another example is that the Lord of the Rings movies left out two characters (and a whole chapter) from the first book that offered the hobbits help on their journey out of the Shire. It was a beautiful and amazing scene in the book, but due to time constraints, they just couldn't add it to the movie.
Anyways, I just rambled on forever when I was trying to talk about 'Divergent' since it's second installment, 'Insurgent' is coming to theaters this week.
'Divergent' by Veronica Roth is set in a dystopian world and it's the story of a girl named Tris and the trials she has to go through to become who she wants to be, and not the person she has been told she should be. Tris was brought up in the Abnegation faction of her society. The Abnegation are taught to be selfless and help others as much as possible. Tris does not feel this to be her calling, but she's afraid that if she chooses another faction, she'll never see her family again. She is given the choice, and ultimately decides to go to another faction, one that no one could have ever expected her to go to. There, she proves to others, and to herself, that she has what it takes to belong to her faction of choosing, but it might not last forever. Tris has a secret that she can't give up to anyone. And because of this secret, the government would believe she is dangerous, and they would hunt her down.
'Divergent' is a good coming-of-age story, showing that you have to fight for what you believe in and you have to control your own life, your own future. It's a great book for fans of 'The Hunger Games' and 'The Testing' books.
What are some of your favorite books that have been made into movies? Leave a comment about it and maybe that will be the one I write about next Book To Movie Monday!
