Doesn't that describe every writer? All writers want to bring their stories to the world, to tell a story through their eyes and those fortunate enough to be able to publish their books, whether through a book publisher or independently, are added to a long list of story tellers throughout history. Even though the written word has not been around since the beginning of our history as humans, it has been around for a sufficient amount of time and it is sometimes the only way we can know what the past held for those alive at the time. We may not know all of the authors the world has known, but many leak through the cracks and are regarded as great writers of their day, even centuries later.
For example, we have the playwright Sophocles, who wrote such plays as Oedipus Rex and Antigone. He is regarded as one of the greatest playwrights of his time and we have access to many of those plays through the written word. It is amazing how, after so many centuries, his name is still one most high school and college students will be exposed to throughout their studies even though he lived around 450AD.
I always recommend exposing yourself to as many writers as possible. I like J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series as much as the next person, but she's not the only author I would read, and it's not the only genre I'd stick with. Throughout my life and my English studies, I've been exposed to so many writers and authors and playwrights that it would make your head spin. All I can say is find an unfamiliar author, a classical piece of work centuries old, or an independent author (they need you to read their books!) and read something new! Find a new favorite author, and never stop changing that favorite! Every other book I read, I always say to myself "This is my new favorite author!" and then I read another book, and I have a new favorite author! The world of books is changing, from Sophocles to Shakespeare, from Mark Twain to Steven King! Never stop changing, and always help your mind grow.
